Beyond Profits: The Power of Fossil Fuel Divestment in Global Sustainability

Understanding Fossil Fuel Divestment: A Global Shift Towards Sustainability
Fossil fuel divestment is removing your investment capital from stocks, bonds, or funds. This global movement for fossil fuel divestment is asking institutes like universities, pension funds, and local authorities to move their money out of companies involved in the extraction and production of fossil fuels such as coal, tar sands, oil, and gas from its portfolio. By pulling their money out of these companies, the companies are essentially voting with their dollars indicating that they don’t support businesses that harm the environment. The idea is to reduce the amount of funding available to these firms which makes it harder for them to operate, thereby reducing their operations which in turn makes it difficult for them to survive.

University of Edinburgh’s Leadership in Fossil Fuel Divestment
The University of Edinburgh has also divested from fossil fuels, contributing significantly to its journey to be carbon neutral by 2040- ten years earlier than recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The University has now removed its investment from these fossil fuel companies and has instead invested more than £170 million in low-carbon technology, climate-related research, and businesses that directly benefit the environment since 2010. By early 2018, the University's direct investment in fossil fuels amounted to less than 1% of its total funds under management. These investments, totaling less than £5 million, represented a fraction of the University's financial portfolio.
In 2018 the university committed to divesting from fossil fuels within 3 years, which it achieved in February 2021 and its direct and pooled investment in fossil fuels has been 0 since then. The endowment fund valued at £560 million for the year ending 2022/23 stands as the largest university endowment fund in Scotland. Moreover, it proudly holds the distinction of being the largest university endowment in the UK to divest completely from direct fossil fuel investments.
