Leading Scotland to Net-Zero: University of Edinburgh's Transformative Role
The University of Edinburgh has been at the forefront of supporting Scotland’s ambitious 2045 net-zero targets. The university has been leveraging its research capabilities to inform government policy and drive tangible change locally and nationally. Two recent projects initiated by the university have been helpful for the government to move further towards achieving its target.

A collaborative effort between the University of Edinburgh and Midlothian Council has researched on the carbon emissions associated with household recycling which is an important aspect of the sustainability agenda. The research led by Professor Sean Smith, chair of Future Construction at the School of Engineering has analyzed recycling waste streams to identify opportunities for carbon reduction.
Key findings of the research have been impressive. The annual carbon and energy savings were equivalent to recharging 5 billion smartphones, driving 103 million car miles, or heating 5000 homes annually, underlying sustainable practices' tangible impact.
Moreover, Professor Sean Smith's research has contributed towards retrofitting 2.6 million homes to meet net-zero targets. He has contributed to innovative solutions at a national scale. His proposals have been integrated into the Scottish Government’s strategy document ‘Achieving Net Zero in Social Housing’ emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to retrofitting.

He suggests to establish a national retrofit task force, bringing together stakeholders from social housing, industry and energy sector experts to streamline efforts and optimize solutions.
The University of Edinburgh’s groundbreaking research has laid the foundation for providing practical solutions to sustainability goals. With the university’s commitment, it acts as a catalyst for positive change in Scotland’s journey towards achieving net zero by 2045. Continued commitment and collaboration of the university and government can be beneficial in excelling towards the path to sustainability.
